Wasatch Rock Climbing

Half or full day Group: 1-4 people From $275 per Person

Note: Benegas Brothers Expeditions strives to provide the highest quality logistics, giving you the best climbing experience possible. For this expedition, we are working through our partner, Wasatch Mountain Guides.

Salt Lake City is known for having some of the best access to outdoor recreation in the country. Mountains and trailheads surround a city with an international airport — and nowhere is that more evident than the Cottonwood Canyons. Within 30 minutes of downtown, Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon offer an extraordinary diversity of climbing terrain: granite slabs, quartzite cracks, and limestone faces — sometimes within a single day. There is no other climbing destination in the US that offers such rock-type diversity in a small area.

Our guided rock climbing programs are built for every level — from someone tying in for the very first time to experienced climbers working toward multi-pitch proficiency. Some of our Little Cottonwood walls reach 1,100 ft in height with up to 10 pitches. Half-day programs get you on high-quality routes with minimal approach. Full-day programs open up the longer, more involved climbs that give you real vertical and real experience. Every day is private and customized to your group.

These programs also serve as a direct training platform for bigger objectives. Many BBE guides use these same walls to prepare clients for alpine routes in the Wasatch, the Cascades, and the greater ranges beyond. The skills built on Cottonwood rock — anchor systems, multi-pitch movement, efficient rope management — transfer directly to any mountain environment.

About the Guides

All Wasatch programs are operated by Wasatch Mountain Guides (WMG) — one of Utah’s most trusted guide services, co-owned by IFMGA-certified Mountain Guide Willie Benegas. Willie brings over 30 years of high-level guiding experience across the Wasatch, the Alaska Range, the Andes, and the Himalaya. Every day in the field is led by AMGA-trained and certified guides who know these mountains in every season and condition.

Yes — for almost everyone. Rock climbing in the Cottonwood Canyons is genuinely accessible for first-timers and genuinely rewarding for experienced climbers. The program adapts completely to who shows up. No prior experience is required for the half-day program. The full-day format opens up intermediate and advanced terrain for those who want to push further.

First Timers

Your guide handles everything — harness fitting, knot instruction, belay basics, and movement technique. The Cottonwood walls offer easy slabs (5.4–5.6) that are perfect for learning footwork and building confidence before moving to steeper terrain. Many of our beginner clients are surprised how quickly they progress in a single half day.

Kids’ Clinics

Rock climbing is an ideal outdoor activity for kids — it builds focus, problem-solving, and confidence in ways that few sports match. Our guides are experienced working with young climbers. Minimum age 10. Ages 10–16 join with a parent. Contact us to discuss a kids’ session.

Intermediate & Advanced Climbers

The full-day program opens up the canyon’s longer, more demanding routes. Some of our favorites:

  • West Slabs — 10 pitches, 5.5
  • Steort’s Ridge — 3 pitches, 5.6
  • Schoolroom — 5 pitches, 5.6
  • Outside Corner — 4 pitches, 5.7
  • Tingey’s Terror — 7 pitches, 5.7
  • Pentapitch — 3–5 pitches, 5.8
  • The Dorsal Fin — 3 pitches, 5.10d
  • Triple Overhangs — 4 pitches, 5.10a
  • Stiffler’s Mom — 7 pitches, 5.11a

There are hundreds more. Your guide selects routes based on your current ability, what you want to learn, and the day’s conditions.

Skills Practice — Full Day

The full-day format allows time to cover intermediate and advanced topics beyond basic climbing:

  • Speed vs. time-efficiency on multi-pitch routes
  • Belaying strategies for different terrain and rope systems
  • Anchor building and evaluation
  • Descending longer routes — rappel systems and route-finding
  • Progression toward independent outdoor climbing

Do I need any climbing experience?

None at all. We guide complete beginners through advanced climbers. Your guide assesses your starting point at the beginning of the session and builds the day from there.

What’s the difference between the half-day and full-day programs?

The half-day (4 hours) focuses on getting you on great rock quickly — ideal for first-timers, families, or visitors with limited time. The full-day (6–8 hours) allows for longer approaches, more pitches, and the time to cover intermediate skills like anchor building, multi-pitch transitions, and rappelling. Experienced climbers get significantly more from the full day.

Can we focus on skills and education rather than just climbing?

Absolutely. Many clients use a private day as a practical rock climbing course — learning to tie in, build anchors, belay a leader, or manage a multi-pitch descent. Tell us your goals when you book and your guide will structure the day accordingly.

Do I need to bring my own gear?

You need harness, helmet, and climbing shoes — all available to rent directly through WMG or at our partner shops in Salt Lake City. Ropes, protection, anchor systems, and all group technical gear are provided by WMG.

What time of year is best?

The Cottonwood Canyons are climbable year-round. May through October is the primary season for most routes — warm temperatures, long days, and dry rock. South-facing walls in Little Cottonwood Canyon are often climbable in winter on clear days. Summer afternoons can be hot at lower elevations — early starts and shaded north-facing crags are preferred. Your guide adjusts the objective based on current conditions.
